Multi-instrumentalist Ray Shiner was born on November 30, 1924 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and attended Eastman School of Music as a young man. His formal studies included first the violin, followed by bass and oboe in college, and later becoming accomplished on saxophone, English horn, piccolo and bass clarinet. His love of big bands led him to a memorable period in the 1950’s with the Sauter-Finegan Big Band. Following this he free-lanced in the New York City music scene, where he was an in-demand studio musician and symphony player. In 1967, Ray left the New York music scene for a position at SUNY Potsdam, teaching jazz and leading its jazz ensemble. He still maintains a relationship with some of his Potsdam students, and currently resides in the Syracuse area.
